Niniejszy tekst jest pierwszym z tekstów zawartych w publikacji wydanej z inicjatywy Stowarzyszenia "Pogranicza" z siedzibą w Ropie - "Rzemieślnicy Beskidu Niskiego"
Publikacja ma na celu promocję kultury ludowej Beskidu Niskiego. Stowarzyszenie "Pogranicza" chce przybliżyć i przekazać informacje o ludowych rzemieślnikach zachodniej Łemkowszczyzny oraz części Pogórza.
Przedstawiamy kamieniarza z Bartnego, łyżkarza z Nowicy, dziegciarzy z Bielanki, maziarzy
z Łosia, kowali i konstruktora wiatraków z Ropy. Prezentacja nie wyczerpuje pełnej listy osób wykonujących ginące zawody, niemniej stanowi przyczynek do refleksji nad potrzebą chronienia ludowego rzemiosła przed zapomnieniem oraz wykorzystania tego dziedzictwa w tworzeniu lokalnego produktu turystycznego.
Większość zaprezentowanych osób nie ma następców w swym fachu, równocześnie osoby te są w starszym wieku, jest to więc "ostatni moment", aby udokumentować ich pracę i tajniki rzemiosł.
Prezentujemy współczesne fotografie rzemieślników oraz zapisy przeprowadzonych z nimi w sierpniu i wrześniu 2007 r. wywiadów. W publikowanych tekstach zachowane zostaly oryginalne wypowiedzi osób, które zostały przytoczone dosłownie.
W każdej z miejscowości, w których mieszkają rzemieślnicy, prowadzona jest działalność agroturystyczna. Osoby prowadzące bazę turystyczną nie wykorzystują jeszcze lokalnego rzemiosła jako atrakcji turystycznej. Chcemy, aby lektura zainicjowała takie zmiany a publikacja na stronie www.beskid-niski.pl promowała lokalne rzemiosło jako dodatkową atrakcję turystyczną.

Niestety, podczas przygotowywania niniejszego materiału dotarła do mnie informacja, iż dnia 18.06.2008 zmarł w wieku 86 lat Pan Włodzimierz Rubicz
 - Pana ojciec był maziarzem?
- Tato się tym nie zajmował.
- Dziadek?
- Dziadek tak, Jan Doliński, jeździł na Węgry, na Słowację.
- Niech Pan opowie o maziarstwie, jak to Pan pamięta. Pan jeździł jeszcze przed wojną, skąd się wzięło maziarstwo w Łosiu?
- W Łosiu były kopanki, była kopalnia ropy w Łosiu i z tego powodu Łosianie robili tą maź. Teraz to zaginęło.
- Czyli była ropa naftowa i co dalej?
- Przetwarzano ją na maź.
- A jak to dokładnie łosianie robili?
- W beczce gotowali ropę, ale ja głównie handlowałem smarowidłem fabrycznym. Może Pietrek Szlanta wie, o mazi, jak robić. On więcej jeździł tu po góralach.
- Gdzie zaopatrywał się Pan w maź?
- W Gorlicach u Dutki. On handlował na Kujawach i tam zrobił interes. Najpierw Żyd Samuel Spitz miał maziarnię i smary w Gorlicach. Za okupacji Żyda skonfiskowali i on przejął fabrykę.
- W którym to miejscu było w Gorlicach?
- Na Zawodziu.
- Skąd miał Pan wóz?
- Wozów było bardzo dużo, bo przecież z jednego domu jeździły dwa i trzy wozy. Jeśli w domu było dwóch synów to i trzech maziarzy jeździło - ojciec jeździł i synowie też jeździli. Takich wozów było dużo, i specjalnie był tu taki rzemieślnik co robił te wozy.
- Jak się nazywał?
- Miron Łukaszyk a jego najlepszym uczniem był Antek Chowaniec ze Szklarek. Kowal też był w Łosiu,
Wacławski się nazywał. On okuwał łosianom całe wozy i robił wszystko co trzeba było.
- A beczki?
- Beczki przed wojną były jeszcze drewniane.
- Czyli był potrzebny kolejny rzemieślnik obsługujący maziarza - bednarz?
- Tak. W Ropicy Polskiej był bednarz, ale bednarzy było więcej. Robili nie tylko beczki, ale i rozmaite koryta, cebrzyki i inne drewniane rzeczy.
- Zaopatrywał się Pan w maź, był wóz, konie, beczki i jechał Pan handlować...
- Jak nabrałem towaru u Dutki, to jechałem w stronę Lublina i w tamtych okolicach sprzedawałem towar. Tam natomiast była fabryka Arona Kapelmana. Żyd taki, w dzielnicy Czwartek miał przed wojną fabrykę smarów. Sprowadzał wagonami rozmaite oliwy. Przed wojną to była największa firma handlowa oliw i materiałów towotnych - firma "Karpaty". Tam kupowałem nowy towar. Oprócz tej firmy w Lublinie był łosian, który handlował na terenach Rosji. Zrobił interes, miał dużo pieniędzy więc w Lublinie kupił plac, wybudował duży dom i założył fabrykę smarów. U niego też żeśmy brali towar.
 - Jak się nazywał?
- To właściwie byli bracia, Wacław i Mikołaj Gal. Raz gdy braliśmy u niego też sieczkę dla koni był dziurawy worek, a on mnie uczył jak się naprawia taki worek. Zginął w Krośnie, z kuzynem Janem Dudrą, gdy poszli kupić konie. Znaleziono ich martwych w hotelu i do dzisiaj jest to niewyjaśniona sprawa, czy złodzieje ich otruli a pieniądze zabrali czy to był wypadek. Obydwaj pochowani są w Łosiu. To oni mieli tę fabrykę w Lublinie, jak się idzie na Majdanek po prawej stronie duży budynek, tam mieszkają dziś potomkowie łosian. Jeździłem
w lubelskie - Żelechów, Łuków, Siedlce, jechałem na Garwolin, Sobolew, Maciejowice, po drugiej stronie Wisły, aż do samej Warszawy - Karczew, Otwock, Garwolin, Miłosna. Jak brakło mi towaru, to kupowałem w Warszawie na Radzymińskiej, u Borkiewicza. Była też firma żydowska w Warszawie, ale myśmy kupowali przeważnie u Borkiewicza. Tam były, tak jak i w Lublinie - mieszkania, pomieszczenia dla przyjezdnych, była stajnia dla koni, można było stać jeden dzień czy dwa dni. Brało się towar na wóz i znowu wracaliśmy w stronę Lublina.
- Kim byli odbiorcy towaru?
- Największymi odbiorcami naszych towarów były majątki i dwory. Przed wojną było bardzo dużo koni, wozów, więc zużywano dużo smarów, tranu do konserwacji uprzęży.
- Tranem je konserwowano?
- Tak i dużo brali od nas też rymarze, do konserwacji skór.
- A tran skąd braliście?
- Ludzie pytali: "skąd bierzecie i skąd bierzecie, ja jeździłem i nie mogłem nigdzie zdobyć tranu..." Jeśli tranu nie było, braliśmy po firmach oliwę
i przetwarzaliśmy ją sami swoim sposobem. Brało się oliwę przepalało kwasem. Przed wojną oliwy były numerowane. Numer 32 to była bardzo dobra oliwa, która nadawała się do kręcenia skór, czarna, rymarze przeważnie jej używali - bo w lubelskiem czy koło Warszawy uprząż konna to wszędzie były szleje, a w Małopolsce chomąta, kantary.
- Ilu maziarzy jeździło przed wojną?
- Łosianie przez całą zimę szykowali wozy, żeby wóz był porządny, mocny i sprawny przez całe lato, aż do zimy. Gdy nadchodził marzec to łosianie już wyjeżdżali w świat. Każdy w swój rejon, w bydgoskie, lubelskie, warszawskie. Każdy miał swój teren, ale byli tacy co jeździli wszędzie.
- Wchodziliście sobie w drogę?
- Niekiedy wchodziliśmy, bo to była konkurencja. Tym bardziej, że jeszcze handlowali Żydzi. Przychodzę ja raz do mojego majątku, a tam Żyd reklamuje swój towar. Konkurencję robili nam Żydzi, którzy też kupowali towar w hurtowniach. Po majątkach, dworach, cegielniach, młynach, tartakach oprócz tranu do uprzęży, mazi do wozów, brano dużo oliwy. Przed wojną po majątkach nie było tak jak teraz traktorów, tylko były lokomobile parowe opalane drewnem, węglem, torfem, i tam używano oliwy cylindrowej, takiej gęstej. Jak zlikwidowano folwarki, dwory to maziarstwo podupadło. Nastały traktory, maszyny, no to wtedy jeszcze bardzo dużo oliwy sprzedawaliśmy po PGR-rach.
- Jak maziarze wyjechali wiosną, to kiedy wracali?
- Jak wyjechali na wiosnę to wracali w grudniu, a byli i tacy łosianie co wozem nie wracali wcale. Jeździli przez zimę, albo konie zostawiali w majątku, dawali towar za przezimowanie koni i konie stały w majątku maziarze do domu wracali pociągiem. Ponieważ na Boże Narodzenie nigdy nie przyjechali wszyscy łosianie do domu powiadano że "Jak wszyscy łosianie zjadą to będzie koniec świata". I nigdy tak nie było, żeby wszyscy wrócili do domu i spotkali się.
- Ile mogło być wozów maziarskich w Łosiu, 30?
- Więcej. W Łosiu było 300 domostw, teraz we wsi są miejsca niezabudowane, bo puste domy porozbierano po wysiedleniu w 1947. W Łosiu nie było ani jednego domu pod słomianą strzechą - wszystkie pod blachą albo kryte gontami. Po wojnie bardzo dużo domów rozbierano, z uwagi na blachę.
 - Maziarstwo dawało spory dochód...
- Łosianie, nie tylko byli bogaci, dużo więcej wiedzieli o świecie niż mieszkańcy innych wsi. Odróżniali się obyciem, kulturą, które to było już inne niż w sąsiednich wsiach. W Łosiu budowano budynki murowane, kryte blachą. Jak mężczyźni wyjeżdżali to gospodarstw pilnowały żony. Do pracy w domu, w zagrodzie
i w polu przyjmowały na służbę szukających pracy. Jak do jakiejś roboty trzeba było kogoś nająć, to wychodzono na szlabant 2, gdzie szukający zarobku ludzie z gór czekali na pracę. Gdy gospodyni potrzebowała kosiarza albo do innej pracy, to przychodziła na szlabant i wybierała robotnika, a byli tam też miejscowi, biedniejsi, którzy też tam czekali na zarobek. Maziarz pieniądze przysłał to kobieta miała za co nająć stałą pomoc domową, a jak było więcej roboty, to najmowała robotników sezonowych. Przed wojną Łosie się powiększało. Były sklepy, był cieśla, kowal. W Ropie był pałac i majątek. Gdy właściciel sprzedawał ziemię to łosianie pokupili w Ropie pola, nazywali je folwark. Dwór sprzedawał lasy więc łosianie pokupili je. To były tzw. wiejskie lasy. Ja mam też 8 hektarów lasu.
- Czyli inwestowali pieniądze w lasy, budynki, ziemię...
- To była jedna taka wyróżniająca się wieś na całe góry, na Łemkowszczyźnie, ubiorem, kulturą, zamożnością, wszystkim. Wyjściowy zimowy ubiór łosiana to dopasowana kurtka z dragonem, bryczesy kangarowe - z najlepszej materii z Bielska Białej. Każdy jeden kawaler nosił eleganckie oficerki.
- Mówi się, że maziarze znali obce języki...
- Jeździli po świecie to i znali. Mój dziadek handlował na Węgrzech, on jeździł tam, a moja babka dowoziła mu towar. Oni dużo umieli mówić po węgiersku, kowal co był u nas też umiał po węgiersku. Gdy chcieliśmy żeby klient, który przyszedł do wozu nie rozumiał co mówimy między sobą, to używaliśmy słów węgierskich. Na przykład mówiło się: "daj mu tam kici" czyli mniej. Języki przydawały się w handlu w Polsce. Wóz maziarski po węgiersku to seker. Handlowaliśmy całą okupację za Niemców, w 1942 jeździłem w Warszawie z kuzynem, jeździliśmy do Węgrowa, Sokołowa Podlaskiego, Broku, Sterdyni, na Karczew, Otwock, Sródborów, aż do Góry Kalwarii. Ja jeździłem do lat 70-tych, ale to był inny handel. Dawniej przeważnie szła maź, oliwa, nafta. Po wojnie maszyny były inne.
- Było niebezpiecznie?
- Było niebezpiecznie, bo był towar, którym w czasie okupacji nie wolno nam było handlować. Z Warszawy końmi do Łosia jechałem cały tydzień, dwa razy jechałem przez Wisłę z takim dużym ciężarem, że gdy sobie teraz pomyślę o zagrożeniu, to nawet teraz cierpnie mi skóra. Raz to było z Karczewa do Góry Kalwarii,
a drugi raz w Dęblinie jechałem przez dużą rzekę. Przyjechałem wtedy końmi do Łosia. Jak już przyjechałem to zacząłem handlować z bratem. Jan miał na imię, rocznik 1917. On miał bardzo szczęśliwą rękę do handlu. Jemu handel szedł dobrze i szybko zarabiał znaczne pieniądze. Tak się wybił. Jeszcze przed wojną pojechał za pomocnika z Dudrą do Lublina i rozeznał okolicę. Na drugi rok poszedł do wojska do Sącza, do I. pułku Strzelców Podhalańskich, w czynnej służbie. Tato dał konie i ja już sam handlowałem w Lublinie.
Za Niemców już handlowaliśmy obaj z Janem, ale to był już inny handel. Niemcy dali zezwolenie na produkty ropopochodne, ale nie wolno nam było handlować ropą, naftą i benzyną. Tylko smar i surowce. Nafty nie było, a interes był na nafcie straszny. Więc szło się na kopalnię, umówiliśmy się z robotnikami, którzy ropę wlewali do beczek. Nocą jeździliśmy po nią krótszymi drogami. Wszystkie kopalnie jakie były: Magdalena, Kryg, Kobylanka, Puste Pole znaliśmy i znaliśmy robotników. Od nich kupowaliśmy ropę, braliśmy do lasu, mieliśmy swój aparat do destylacji. Była to beczka 400 albo 300 litrowa ustawiona na podwyższeniu, pod nią paliliśmy i wytwarzaliśmy naftę. Najpierw szła leciutka benzyna, później szła cięższa, później nafta, zostawał smar, czarna ciecz, też się sprzedawało, do smarowania płotów. Benzyna i nafta to były produkty potrzebne Niemcom na front. Za handel nimi groziła kara śmierci, były rozwieszane obwieszczenia, że nie wolno było tym handlować pod karą śmierci. Jednak nas to kusiło, bo pieniądze szły bardzo duże, 7 złotych za litr nafty, to były pieniądze straszne, więc nie zważaliśmy na karę śmierci. Meldowali nas ludzie, że robimy naftę, musieliśmy uciekać, kryć się do potoku w Łosiu. Woziliśmy beczki żelazne z naftą, bywało, że beczkę żelazną skurczybyk siekierą przebił, albo pokradli, albo niszczyli..
- Niemcy?
- Nie zazdrośnicy!, tu z Łosia. Do tego kusił w lubelskiem handel tytoniem, stamtąd tytoń wieźliśmy, liście
i sprzedawaliśmy od razu w Rzeszowie. W Biłgoraju zatrzymują nasz wóz Niemcy ...
 - Handel tytoniem był zakazany?
- Tak. Szczęście, że nie kontrolowali wozu, sprawdzili tylko papiery i więcej nic. Pojechaliśmy dalej, ale za nim ta kontrola minęła, to czapka tak urosła mi na głowie. Handlowaliśmy cały czas. Z krakowskiego i zza Wisły też tytoń woziliśmy, ja nie paliłem, szwagier palił. No to pewnego razu musiał uciekać przez okno, bo milicja strzelała za nim. Jeździliśmy całą okupację. Nie raz dostałem w twarz. Jechałem do Lublina, a ja nie znałem przepisów drogowych, tak jak teraz. Niemcy jechali od Lublina, ja do Lublina. Po prawej stronie stał niemiecki samochód. Ja miałem obowiązek zaczekać, przepuścić Niemca, a ja jadę, nie patrząc na Niemców i że samochód jedzie z prawej. Mijam samochód, a ten przejechał koło mnie, stanął i Niemiec mówi, że "źle jechał" i lu mnie w twarz. Drugi raz z Krakowa pojechaliśmy w interesach. Jechaliśmy pociągiem i Niemcy wygnali nas z wagonu, mówili że "tylko dla Niemców". Jechaliśmy na Tarnów, Niemiec uderzył mnie po twarzy, a ja uciekłem pod wagon i wsiadłem do drugiego wagonu. l dojechałem do Tarnowa. Tak się udawało, aż dwóch moich braci Niemcy złapali w Ciężkowicach, z towarem, z naftą. Skonfiskowali wóz i towar i zatrzymali w majątku po drugiej stronie rzeki Białej, a ich zabrali do Grybowa. Obaj w Grybowie siedzieli. Tam był młyn i w tym młynie był obóz, i tam nie tylko oni byli, dużo Polaków. Trzymali tam rozmaitych ludzi i brali ich na roboty. Ja wtenczas robiłem w Brunarach w okopach. Od Brunar do Florynki były kopane okopy, robiłem tam 8 miesięcy. Ja przyjechałem przebrać się do domu i po jedzenie, a tu powiedzieli mi, że bracia są aresztowani i że są w lagrze w Grybowie. Tato umiał rozmawiać po niemiecku bardzo dobrze, bo był przy austriackiej żandarmerii, to umiał czytać i pisać po niemiecku. Poszedł do starosty niemieckiego i wyprosił zgodę na wykupienie koni i wozu, zapłacił 4 tysiące złotych. Niemcy oddali wóz i konie, a towar został skonfiskowany.
Szwagier mówi do mnie: "Są konie, jest wóz, towar zrychtuję, ale ja nie pójdę handlować, bo mam żonę i dzieci. Boję się, nie pójdę nigdzie. Jak chcesz to idź ty, sprzedaj, pohandluj". Uciekłem z okopów, siadłem na wóz
z towarem i pojechałem. Najpierw zajrzałem do Grybowa, do braci. Tam zobaczyłem jak żyją, jak ich robactwo gryzie. Wszy było tam co niemiara, tak że butelkami na podłodze je gnietli, tak było tego robactwa. Jak to ujrzałem zdecydowałem się ostatecznie. Niech się dzieje co chce, pojechałem za Wisłę, towar sprzedałem, przywiozłem pieniądze i dałem bratu, żeby wykupił braci. W taki sposób obaj bracia wrócili do domu. Rozmaite przeżycia miałem.
- Po wojnie jak Pan jeździł też było ciężko? Władza przeszkadzała?
- Nie było problemu, każdy wykupił kartę na "rozwoźny handel smarami na całą Polskę". Był podatek, posterunkowi niekiedy zatrzymywali, ale handlowało się...
Ja handlowałem do lat 70 - tych. Gospodarze mieli już traktory i rozmaite maszyny. Handlowałem w okolicach Płocka, Wyszogrodu, Płońska, aż do Nowego Dworu Mazowieckiego, tam zapotrzebowanie było: cegielnie, PGR-ry, młyny, gospodarstwa, bardzo dużo tego szło towotu, oliwy, nafty, gospodarstwa były duże, zdarzyło się, że do jednego gospodarza sprzedałem beczkę oliwy, beczkę towotu i 16 beczek ropy.
- Tyle się mogło zmieścić na wóz?
- Ale ja już wtedy nie takim wozem sekerem jeździłem. Mieliśmy wóz na gumowych oponach i grube deski.
- Konie ciągnęły?
- Konie miałem porządne, duże, ostre konie, że hej. Trzy tony to na nie mogłem ładować, ale miałem kłopot, bo w tamtych okolicach było dużo cukrowni. Do cukrowni szły kolejki wąskotorowe, konie się bały, co chwile dyszel był złamany, musiałem uważać, jak gdzieś była kolejka.
- Czyli łosian oprócz domów, strojów, pieniędzy, majątków wyróżniały konie, w innych wsiach takich koni chyba nie było?
- U nas były trzy konie, dwoma jeździłem ja, a trzeci pracował na gospodarstwie, w domu.
- A skąd sprowadzano konie?
- Jeździliśmy do Starego Sącza, Nowego Sącza, do Krosna, tam były największe targi koni.
- Ciekawostki maziarskie?
- Łopatki były używane do brania smaru z beczki. Klientowi nakładało się do puszki najczęściej bez ważenia. Kiedyś klient mówił: "Panie, ale ja będę ważył". Kiedy zważył i waga się zgadzała idealnie, mówi: "ale pan ma dobre oko". Panie jak się jeździ tyle lat, sprzedaje się, to taką rękę miałem, że jak nakładałem bez wagi, choć mieliśmy wagę sprężynową, to waga zawsze się zgadzała. Gdy klient kupował większą ilość towaru, to szedłem z gospodarzem i tarowało się naczynie. Też z wprawą. Dla drobniejszego handlu miałem zrobioną beczkę drewnianą z otworem zatykaną drewnianym korkiem. Beczkę obracało się otworem w dół, wyjmowało się korek i nalewało bezpośrednio do maźnicy, bez lejka, bo potrafiłem nalać nawet do butelki bez rozlania. Panny kradły nam z wozów łopatki, bo było przekonanie, że jak zdobyła dziewczyna maziarską łopatkę to wkrótce wyjdzie za mąż. Miały też inne wróżby na zamążpójście. Wrzucały nam kłębek nici do wozu, te nici się wlokły za wozem. Tak było w lubelskiem.
 - A panny sprowadzaliście do Łosia?
- Jeden maziarz przywiózł sobie elegancką panią, śliczną, zgrabną, akuszerką była. Ale to był wyjątek, prawie że tylko ona jedna była spoza Łosia, bo łosianie żenili się w swojej wsi. Wszyscy we wsi byli sobie rodziną. Jedna panna była wydana w Dębicy i jedna do Krynicy.
- Trudno dzielić się majątkiem.
- Przed wojną 500 dolarów dawali na wiano dziewczynie, a dolar był po 5 złotych. Całe wesele kosztowało mnie. Oprócz wyprawy był zwyczaj, że jak było wesele, to nikt niczego nikomu nie dawał, ani od nikogo nie brał - goście nie przynosili żadnych prezentów. Jakby ktoś z Łosia przyniósł prezent, to ambicja i honor nie pozwałały tego przyjąć obdarowanemu.
- Co Pan myśli o tym, czy w Łosiu trzeba utworzyć muzeum maziarstwa?
- Trzymam oficerki, porządne oficerki do muzeum.
- Jest wóz, mogłaby być zagroda, żeby ludzie przyjezdni mogli zobaczyć taką atrakcję...
- Jak ja już, nie daj Bóg umrę, no to już żywego maziarza nie będzie, który by sam opowiadał o maziarstwie. Ja jeździłem z bratem, jeździłem z kuzynem i z innymi, ze szwagrem. Byłem w lubelskiem, bydgoskim, warszawskim, krakowskim, na Śląsku, na Orawie. Raz sklepikarz poczęstował mnie śliwowicą, nalał kieliszek tom wypił. Co to jest dla młodego chłopa, wypiłem drugi, "wypij Pan trzeci", siadłem na wóz czapkę zgubiłem, bat zgubiłem, taki byłem pijany od tej śliwowicy, ale szczęście, że miałem pomocnika to on musiał jechać końmi, a ja tylko siedziałem na wozie. Taka była mocna ta śliwowica.
- Pan w ostatnich latach był wozem maziarskim na rynku w Krakowie?
- W Krakowie, co opowiadałem o maziarstwie, to dużo starszych ludzi pamiętało takie wozy i maziarzy, mówiło: "tak, tak, pamiętam"
- Jak współcześnie wykorzystać maziarstwo dla turystyki - bo drugiej takiej wsi jak Łosie nie było?
- Taki wczasowicz co przyjedzie, przecież bardzo dużo ich po Łosiu chodzi, dobrze by było, żeby mógł iść do stajni, sobie wóz pooglądać i móc pojeździć po okolicy. Jak byłem w Zdyni to warszawiakom mówiłem o dziegciu.
- Handlowaliście dziegciem?
- Tak, jak się jeździło to mieliśmy też dziegieć.
- A z Bielanki?
- Sama Bielanka tyle by nie nastarczyła.
- Skąd braliście?
- Z fabryki Szczebrzeszyn, albo w Małopolsce z Dęby, a na północy z Hajnówki.
- Okazuje się, że handlowaliście, oprócz smarów, oliwą, terpentyną, ale i tytoniem, dziegciem...
